Turf toe
Turf toe, as suggested by the name, most commonly involves injuries sustained on artificial turf like rugby, soccer and hockey. This happens when the toe is hyperextended forcefully, causing a sprain of the main joint in the big toe and damaged surrounding soft tissue structure.
Turf toe generally presents as a tender big toe joint accompanied with swelling and bruising, and is worse when you try to bend your toe upwards. It is important to offload the affected toe immediately after the injury to prevent further damage. Treatment for this condition focuses on promoting healing, restore joint motion and to prevent re-injury.
