Sever’s disease
ever’s disease, also known as growing pain or calcaneal apophysitis, is a painful heel condition. It most commonly affects young children aged between 8 and 14 years old who are physically active. The symptoms often occur during or after sports, and can be accompanied by swelling or calf muscle stiffness.
The growth plates of the bones are weaker than nearby muscles, tendon and ligaments. With repetitive stress or pulling, the area where the Achilles tendon attaches at the heel can be inflamed causing pain and inflammation.
Treatment for Sever’s disease focuses on reducing pain and symptoms, and treatment plan is based on the child’s activity and presentation. Some of the treatment options include activity modification, stretching exercises, orthotics, dry needling and taping.
