Sesamoiditis
Sesamoiditis is the inflammation of the sesamoid bones, two small bones that are located underneath the big toe joint. This is usually caused by overuse and repetitive impact, as these bones are subjective to high pressure when the big toe is being pushed.
Sesamoiditis usually presents as redness and swelling of the big toe joint, and it can be painful to bend the toe upwards. In some cases, these bones can be fractured and severely affects one’s ability to walk or put weight on the big toe.
The treatment goals for sesamoiditis are to offload the affected area and to relieve painful symptoms. This allows the bones to heal, and can be achieved with rest, padding, strapping or orthotics. In severe cases where the pain is persistent or the bones are severely fractured, immobilization boot or surgery might be required.
